Special Education
The mission of Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh Cailini is to give every child the opportunity to experience success in learning and to achieve to the best of their abilities.
We aim to ensure that all children gain access to a broad and balanced curriculum and that they have an equal opportunity to receive an education which is appropriate to their needs.
The school has a dedicated Special Educational Needs Team which provides support for students with a variety of special educational needs.
There is a strong emphasis in the school in early intervention and on in class support. Evidence indicates that the implementation of early intervention programmes in early primary classes is a very effective response to meeting the needs of children who may experience learning difficulties.
Girls from Junior Infants to Second Class participiate in a literacy programme every year. This is a whole class intervention aimed at increasing each child’s competency in oral language, reading and writing. It is a daily literacy hour where support teachers in collaboration with the class teacher, will work in the classroom.
During the lessons, the class is divided into four groups with a teacher taking each group in rotation for 10 minutes. During each session, children will experience four activities: New Reading, Familiar Reading, Phonics, and Writing. Students in the younger classes also participate in fine motor skills sessions.
